The Ancient World Heritage Town Of Hoi An, Vietnam
Hoi An is located in the lower section of the Thu Bon River, only 30 km southeast of Da Nang City.
From Hue, we arrived here via a shuttle van which picked us up at our hotel, drove like a maniac through flooded streets and dropped us at our hotel in Hoi An.
The ancient town of Hoi An has been continuously occupied for the past 2000 years.
It was an active trading port from the 15th century until the 19th century.
The old buildings and the street plan of the city were designed with foreign influences that give this city a unique character.
The city sits at the confluence of a few major rivers that open to the sea.
Centuries ago, Hoi An traded with Da Nang through this network of rivers, and with the old capital of Tra Kieu and with the temple sanctuary of My Son.
On the day we arrived in Hoi An, the “Thu Bon River” which runs through the heart of the old city, was overflowing its banks.
Streets by the river were flooded, and some were completely inaccessible.
But this did not deter the locals from continuing on with their vibrant daily lives.
Boats decorated with colorful lanterns offered scenic boat rides, vendors sold all sorts of souvenirs, lanterns or foods, and stores sold clothing and bags, silk scarves and tailor made outfits.
The cafes and restaurants were at full capacity and bicycle rickshaws carried tourists through the busy streets.
The overflowing river and the rain soaked streets, did not feel miserable, instead the colorful lights of the lanterns were reflected on the asphalt and on the glistening river.
It felt absolutely magical…. And I am so happy to be here…
