Rattle Snake Canyon and Owl Canyon, Page, Arizona
Rattle Snake Canyon has very narrow walls, and in some places, it is barely wide enough to place one foot at a time.
It is a stunningly beautiful canyon.
Owl Canyon is wide, which allows lots of sunshine onto the middle walking path, but it does not have the same dramatic shadows and lighting on its wavy walls, that you see in the more narrow canyons.
Rattle Snake Canyon, with its very narrow pathway, has small ladders to assist visitors in climbing up the different canyon elevations.
Nature created here a mystical atmosphere and unparalleled sculptures.
Just like Mountain Sheep Canyon, Rattle Snake Canyon is a delight for the senses.
It is easy to see why it is forbidden to visit during stormy days.
The rain water pushes itself up these canyon walls with great force, carving the sandstone into amazing shapes.
These canyons are a work of art that is never really finished.
Every month of every year, the sun, water and wind work their magic on shaping these canyons.
As humans, we have an instinctive reaction to being in dramatic natural places.
If you have ever stood at the top of a gorge and looked down, you might have felt awe mixed with a slight sense of vertigo, or a feeling of how small we are in comparison to the vastness around us.
It is the same when walking in these narrow canyons.
As the walls narrow along your oath, you get a sense of excitement, like a kid who is entering a dark unknown cave.
Or when the walls of the canyon curve and you cannot see that the path continues around the narrow bend, it is a delight to see that you are entering new chambers that lead to new discoveries.
As always, the photos only capture a tiny part of the story, and these canyons, in my opinion, are more mystical than the photos show.
