A Christmas Story....
We are going back to ski season in Colorado.
Home is calling us and my heart is yearning to be back there...
I thought I'd share a short story I observed last ski season.
A bit of A background:
Some of the best and most exclusive ski resorts in the USA, are nestled on the curves of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado.
Christmas and New Year, are never overlooked.
They are prime ski times and families from all over the USA, South America, Europe and the whole world, fly over to celebrate together a most memorable Christmas, filled with good food, beautiful hotels, and the best powder skiing on the planet.
Every pine tree is lovingly decorated with white lights and all the roads, leading to and from the ski resorts are glowing with elegant white lights.
The decoration is never garish.
You will not see a multicolor techno lights here, and there are no nativity scenes or fat Santas wearing red suit that are too small for their frame, on these mountains....
The alpine ski resorts, are transformed into a magical fairy tale looking places, to give the locals and the tourists the sprit of a fantasy/ fantastic holidays.
In Vail and Beaver Creek, they go out of their ways, to make you feel welcomed.
At the end of a ski day, when your thighs are burning from hours of skiing, you can get a free chocolate chips cookie, still warm from the oven, given to you with a smile from a tray, held by chefs with white hats, right at the bottom of the slopes.
You can drink free cider or hot chocolate, get free healthy snack bars, free lip gloss to protect your lips from the sun and the snow.
You can get free Suntan lotions, free postcards to send to the envious family members you've left behind, and all the shuttle buses around the towns are free.
Cafes offer free Wi Fi Internet and there is free music, samples of wine and nibbles, and many more treats to make you feel welcomed and contented.
But it is important to remember that even though this may look like a far away fairy tale land, this is still a ski resort, filled with stores, restaurants and hotels, getting deliveries, checking in guests, taking them back and from to the Denver Airport, cooking food, selling skis, and hats and boots.....
During a walk down the village, I noticed a family of five, walking joyfully holding hands.
They were singing Christmas tunes to themselves.... All merry and obviously having fun.
It was mid week and a nearby store was getting its deliveries.
Suddenly, the father, who was a large man in his late forties, stopped looking absolutely stunned....
He turned to his wife and said with ALL SINCERITY: "Look honey, they have UPS trucks in Paradise..."
Ahaaa... (I sigh)... The fools you see around....
Home is calling us and my heart is yearning to be back there...
